EveIn Me Begins

Do you ever feel like you have a good angel on one shoulder encouraging you to do right and a bad angel on the other encouraging you to do wrong? Well, I’m here to tell you, you aren’t alone. As a matter of fact, the first woman created on earth experienced this too! Her name was Eve. Eve’s story begins in the Bible in the first book titled Genesis. Created from Adams’s rib, Eve was the first woman to disobey God in the Garden of Eden by eating the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge when deceived by that bad angel we all have talking to us. Let us dive in!

The Deceptive Serpent

Genesis 3:1-7 (Hover over or tap the Bible links to preview.)

1 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the LORD God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

 “There’s a snake hidden in the grass” or “Make sure you cut the grass low so the snakes don’t show” are commonly heard today to represent how deceitful, conniving, and dishonest snakes are.

Eve’s Response

2 “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied.

3 “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’”

As I read this passage, I felt like I was transported to the Garden of Eden, watching Eve make her fateful decision. “NO! EVE, DON’T DO IT!” Because we now know nothing good comes from anything that starts with a snake, let alone a talking snake.

The Temptation

4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. 5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

In real life, our curiosity seems to get the best of us the majority of the time when presented with something easier, better, or something we feel is more beneficial to us.

Suppose someone was to present me with a job position with more money, fewer tasks, and less time. In that case, I’m going to hear them out because it’s easier, better, and going to benefit me in the long run, and let’s face it, no one wants to work these days. We all want the easy way out if we have access to it (Eve in me).

I know we would like to think we would turn down this snake when we are the outsiders looking in, but, I can’t say that I would if I’m being honest with myself because we wouldn’t have known what we know now, just like Eve didn’t.

The Decision

6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.

Once Eve heard she would not die and she could be like GOD, she wanted in, and it didn’t help that the fruit already looked delicious. How many times has wickedness tempted us and it took for that one thing to be said, done, or shown to us and that just furthermore confirmed to us that we should indulge? I used to be considered the “party girl” in my past. If I heard the right song with some hype lyrics, if I was offered a shot, or if I saw the “LIT” picture on Facebook, that was it for me! (Eve in me*) But, thank GOD for deliverance! What tempts you?

Consequences & Awareness

7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

We now have to have our eyes open, constantly, just as Eve’s eyes were now opened for what may look, sound, or feel right, because as we see, it’s not always right!

All of us have an Eve in us and will fall short of God’s commands at some point of time. We are imperfect. Let us continue striving to remain faithful on our spiritual journey in spite of. We are offered Grace (undeserved favor) in and over our lives. Pray and speak to GOD, be truthful about your wrongdoings and feelings with him. Yes! He already knows, but He wants to hear it from you. Have you ever had anyone come and confess their wrongdoing to you and you already knew, but were waiting patiently to see if they were going to tell you? Didn’t you have more respect and understanding or them afterward? Can we not do the same with God?
